What Is Periodontal Disease?

This disease is an infection of the gums. When you eat and drink, the food and liquid can get beneath the gum line and invite bacteria. The bacterial overgrowth can cause decay on the top of your gum line and cause an infection under the gum line.

How to Avoid This Problem

There are 4 things that you need to do to avoid this dental health issue:

  1. Floss regularly
  2. Rinse your mouth regularly either with over the counter solutions or with warm salted water. This will keep the bacteria in your mouth down.
  3. Brush regularly for at least 2 minutes each session.
  4. Have regular dental check-ups and cleanings.

Flossing regularly will remove the plaque and tartar build up beneath the gum line. Rinsing your mouth will dislodge any trapped particles. Flushed out trapped particles with a mouth rinse after meals will help to discourage overgrowth of bacteria.

Your dentist is your greatest ally when it comes to good oral health including keeping the risk of periodontal disease down.
